Sunday 27 April

  • 22 top choirs from as far afield as Guernsey and Suffolk will take on top local choirs at The Anvil in Basingstoke on 27 April
  • Tickets £5 available from The Anvil, Basingstoke: http://bit.ly/1ddipfX or call 01256 844244
  • See expert judges David Lawrence (conductor for BBC Songs of Praise), Stephen Connolly (Former Kings Singers co-director) and Joanna Forbes-L’Estrange (renowned recording artist and coach)
  • Release your inner diva and get singing with leading conductor and broadcaster Greg Beardsell
  • Celebrate Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games by joining with Big Big Sing workshops

In less than a week the roof of the Anvil Basingstoke will be well and truly raised as 600 singers from 22 choirs battle it out for a place in the next stages of Choir of the Year, the UK’s largest amateur singing competition. With singers aged from 9-85 and repertoire ranging from Britten to the Beatles the auditions on 27 April promise to showcase the British choral tradition at its broadest and best.

For only £5 audience members will be treated to a half-day’s music making of the highest quality as conductor and presenter Greg Beardsell leads them through the session, which ends with a half-hour workshop featuring material from the Big Big Sing. Part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme, Big Big Sing encourages singers of all abilities to embrace musical styles from across the commonwealth including Samoa, South Africa and of course Scotland. Tickets for each half-day session are still available for only £5 from the Basingstoke Anvil box office, either online at http://bit.ly/1ddipfX or via telephone at 01256 844244.

Choirs will strive to impress three of the country’s leading choral experts in a bid to progress to the next round of the competition. Ultimately choirs are competing for a place in the Grand Final at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on 7 December, broadcast on BBC FOUR and BBC Radio 3 – but with only six places available competition is extremely tough. With choirs from far and wide converging on Basingstoke, the Anvil could play host to the first audition from the new Choir of the Year 2014 – and you could be there to hear them.

2014 is the 30th anniversary of Choir of the Year, which has seen over 130 000 singers take part since its first auditions back in 1984. To tie in with this celebratory mode audience and choirs are encouraged to take to Twitter using #choiroftheyear to really generate some buzz about one of the biggest events in the UK choral calendar.

About Choir of the Year  (www.choiroftheyear.com)

Choir of the Year is the UK’s national amateur group singing competition and the most prestigious event of its kind – winning the competition is the ultimate achievement for any UK choir.

Since 1984 more than 130,000 singers of all ages have taken part in this biennial festival of singing, performing in a vast array of styles including pop, gospel, barbershop, classical and World music. Choirs perform to a live audience and have expert judges provide live feedback and written guidance notes following their performance.

Choir of the Year is more than a competition and helps choirs to become the best they can, providing the opportunity for singers of all ages and backgrounds to meet and exchange ideas. It raises the aspirations of thousands of singers by promoting teamwork, dedication and a passion for singing.

Choir of the Year is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and by the Peter Sowerby Foundation.
