Join in an infectious celebration of singing this spring as Choir of the Year tours venues across the UK in a search to find the best amateur choir. Choir of the Year is the UK’s national choral competition and in 2014 invites choirs to celebrate its 30th anniversary and the sixteenth biennial competition.

Supported by family, friends and members of the public, around 140 choirs from Classical to Jazz, Gospel to Glee will take the stage at Audition venues around the country in an attempt to impress a panel of expert judges and be voted through to the semi-finals.

Any amateur choir consisting of 8-100 singers can take part and registration is now open at Following the Auditions, which take place from March to June, the top sixteen choirs will go through to the Category Finals at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 19 October 2014 and from there just six Grand Finalists will compete for the title Choir of the Year 2014 at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on 7 December 2014, broadcast on BBC Radio and TV. Presenter and conductor Greg Beardsell will ensure choirs and audiences alike raise the roof with their voices in this national celebration of choral singing.

Big Big Sing – Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme
Choir of the Year is joining forces with Big Big Sing – a nationwide celebration of singing - to mark the  Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The project aims to inspire people across the UK to join in the celebrations of the Games and to start enjoying the benefits of singing in 2014.

The Big Big Sing will be running two workshops during each Audition day for singers of all abilities. Members of the public can attend a Big Big Sing workshop in the morning and go to the Choir of the Year Audition for free in the afternoon or vice versa.

About the Big Big Sing (

An initiative of Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, Big Big Sing is set to be one of the highlights of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. It is funded by Spirit of 2012 Trust, Glasgow 2014, Creative Scotland, and Glasgow UNESCO City of Music. Today’s announcement reveals the first details of its UK-wide programme to promote singing in the run up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, including the first in a series of Big Big Sing Days, the launch of the Big Big Commonwealth Songbook, and a Schools’ Songwriting Competition.

A series of Big Big Sing Days will be held across the country between February and July, welcoming participants of all ages and abilities to discover the joy of singing in some of the UK’s top music venues – no previous experience is required, singers can simply go along and enjoy a fun filled day packed with singing, workshops and a huge variety of music from across the Commonwealth.

Events kick off with Big Big Sing Days in Scotland’s largest cities before spreading across the UK. Choir of the Year will host Big Big Sing workshops as part of its 2014 audition days. 

The first venues to host Big Big Sing days are:
